This collection contains photocopies of documents, articles, clippings, reference materials, blueprints, listings, notes, maps, ephemera, photographs, 8mm films, micro films, video tapes, and video disks created and/or collected by James L. Kerr, III during his lifetime. Series I. Entente has three subseries : (a) Great Britain subseries consists of RFC/RAF squadron histories, combat casualties, communiqués, unit locations in France, summaries of air intelligence reports, combat in the air reports, daily reports, war diaries, squadron record books, and daily reports of operations, (b) France subseries contains compte rendu reports or daily reports from French units, and (c) USAAS subseries contains pilot listings and American air intelligence bulletins and summaries. Series II. Central powers has two subseries : (a) German subseries consists of the Nachrichtenblatt der Luftstreitkräfte of the various armies of the Kommandeur der Fliegertruppen (KOFL), the Marine Luftfahrt-Abteilung, Marine-Flieger-Abteilung, and German Extracts, and (b) k.u.k. Austro-Hungarian subseries includes the Nachrichtenblatt der k.u.k. Luftfahrtruppen, pilots, aircraft manufacturers and Austrian-Hungarian units listings. Series III. Publications has three subseries : (a) Entente subseries contains articles and clippings regarding aircraft manufacturers and their various models, unit histories, and pilot's biographies and their achievements. Some of the articles were authored or co-authored by James L. Kerr. Of particular interest are the articles on Italian units, battles, and personnel, namely the Caporetto articles Part I through III or Silvio Scaroni by Kerr, (b) Central subseries includes articles and clippings pertaining to the German and k.u.k. Austro-Hungarian as well as the Ottoman Air Forces and their aircraft, biographies, and units, and (c) general publications subseries covers general topics of World War I aviation history that do not necessarily fall into the above mentioned categories. The researcher will find catalogs and reference sources and a chronology of World War I here. Series IV. Audiovisual media has four subseries : (a) Moving images subseries includes various video tapes and 8mm film depicting topics like Battle of Britain, The Dawn Patrol, or Hell's Angels among others. Of interest are items 12 and 13 covering the Over the Front seminar held by Kerr, (b) Still images subseries contains microfilm covering the records of the American Expeditionary Forces, combats in the air reports and war diaries of RFC/RAF as well as photographs and transparencies of aircraft, units, and personnel of all the main countries engaged in World War I, (c) Audio subseries contains two audio tapes with titles Zeppelins-, and various symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven, and (d) Video disk subseries are from the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum containing indices of aircraft manufacturers and other aircraft types, biographical information, as well as information about aviation collections overseas.

James Lee Kerr III was born on May 27, 1946 in Corpus Christi, Texas to a family with a long tradition of service to the United States Navy and roots in Texas dating back to 1822.
